Por una revalorización del trabajo docente

Algunas personas que nos dedicamos a la enseñanza esperamos que la cuarentena genere mucho más que narrativas épicas de superación personal y talleres motivacionales y de disminución del estrés, que muy amablemente nos han ofrecido nuestras instituciones. Y aunque los docentes resentimos el peso de la responsabilidad de tomar tantas decisiones en un contexto donde la desigualdad de condiciones en nuestros estudiantes se ha exacerbado, también el home office ha servido para mostrar al mundo y a nosotros mismos las condiciones en que desarrollamos nuestra profesión. La triple desgracia –pandemia, confinamiento y crisis económica–, ha logrado que emerja en nosotros, como nunca lo fue en el mundo presencial, lo que Marx y Engels denominaban “conciencia de clase”.

Es así como lo que a mediados de marzo parecía una oportunidad para preservar nuestro empleo “desde la comodidad del hogar” y en condiciones “más relajadas”, contundentemente dio paso a que aceptáramos que trabajar a distancia requiere un mayor desgaste de energía e inversión de tiempo. Maestras y maestros de todos los grados de escolaridad coincidimos en considerar aberrante que nos pregunten si nos están pagando lo mismo en el encierro que cuando acudíamos al salón de clases. Por supuesto, en la mente de una parte de la sociedad la lógica es que si dictamos cátedra desde casa debemos por ende devengar un menor sueldo, quizás porque piensan que no estamos –en el lenguaje común del mexicano–, “partiéndonos la madre” adentro de un aula, que nadie vigila nuestra hora de entrada y salida, o que ahora no tenemos que levantarnos temprano para acudir a nuestra institución y que posiblemente estamos “de güevones” en nuestras casas despertándonos sólo para prender la computadora y comenzar a impartir la sesión con una taza de café a un lado.

Este tipo de pensamientos no apareció con la cuarentena; la realidad es que en las últimas décadas fuimos presenciando una desvalorización de nuestro oficio. Sobre todo en algunos colegios privados, el “clientelismo” ha significado que los padres de familia se empoderen como los expertos en pedagogía, en disciplina en el aula, en manejo de contenidos (como ejemplo tenemos la propuesta todavía latente de cierto grupo de padres de familia que presiona a los legisladores para que aprueben el llamado PIN parental); los directivos han cedido a muchas de las demandas de papás y mamás puesto que les aterra la idea de que éstos busquen otras opciones de escuelas. Por otra parte, la pérdida del trabajo de toda la vida (fenómeno experimentado en muchísimas ocupaciones) ha provocado que los docentes vivamos con la incertidumbre permanente sobre nuestra estadía en el puesto, por lo que nos hemos convertido en personas sumisas frente al sistema. La crisis económica derivada del confinamiento nos ha vuelto aún más serviles: no dejamos de asentir a todos los requerimientos que nos piden, pues ahora vivimos agradecidos porque mantenemos una ocupación en medio del desempleo generalizado.

No obstante, como nunca la crisis de la cuarentena nos ha puesto en una evidente situación de explotación laboral. Antes nos avergonzábamos de aceptar que el tiempo dedicado a nuestras clases no era exactamente el establecido en nuestro itinerario. Sabíamos que ese “noble” horario de 7:30 am a 3:00 pm —para el caso de muchos colegas de colegios privados— daba por supuesto que había que dedicarle tres o cuatro horas más a nuestro trabajo una vez que llegábamos a nuestra casa: preparábamos material, reelaborábamos objetivos y pedagogías, revisábamos tareas, atendíamos dudas y brindábamos asesorías vía correo electrónico. Preferíamos no obstante mantener esta parte de nuestro trabajo en la sombra; era una zona “invisible” de nuestro quehacer. Quienes hemos tenido la experiencia de ser profesores de cátedra, por ejemplo, sabemos que en el mundo presencial insistíamos en enunciar que nuestros sueldos estaban tasados con base en las horas que pasábamos frente al salón, cuando es lógico pensar –aunque nunca lo decíamos– que cada hora frente a grupo implicaba una o dos horas más de inversión de trabajo afuera del aula.

Ahora, en la cuarentena, este tiempo dedicado a la docencia cruelmente se ha multiplicado por dos o dos veces y media. Nunca como en el presente el trabajo de profesor se acercó tanto a lo que se vanagloria en estos tiempos posmodernos como el “24/7”. Cualquier acción dedicada a nuestra clase hay que labrarla casi artesanalmente, pues antes de la cuarentena nuestros cursos no existían en su versión digital. Las horas de capacitación han sido abrumadoras. Además, jamás cuestionamos (ni cuestionaremos) que para generar las sesiones en videoconferencia absorbemos costos significativos de internet, luz, clima, calefacción. Asimismo, la comunicación con los estudiantes se ha fragmentado; tenemos que atender una cantidad de mensajes que diariamente rebasa la centena. Todos los días a todas horas en todo momento hay innumerables pendientes que nos han convertido en anexos de un teléfono celular, IPAD o computadora.

No es una pregunta ociosa, sin embargo, cuestionar si las clases a distancia son realmente pagadas con un menor sueldo. Existen casos ya documentados en Monterrey y en otras ciudades donde algunos colegios y escuelas privadas –sin emitir una justificación racional, pues no la hay– han impuesto a los profesores un menor pago en las clases a distancia. ¡Increíble! Pensemos, como es ya un dicho común entre los colegas, que lo racional sería que por las clases virtuales deberíamos de recibir un pago que fuese al menos el doble de lo anterior, debido al mayor costo en tiempo y recursos propios que entraña impartir y dar seguimiento a las sesiones con los estudiantes.

Nunca como ahora es necesario cuestionar qué estuvo pasando y qué pasa ahora con el valor de nuestro trabajo. En el caso de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) existe dentro de su “Reglamento del Personal Académico” una justificación del pago según diez categorías en que se pueden ubicar maestros y maestras: Asignatura A, B o C; Asociado A, B o C; y Titular A, B, C o D. El tabulador está disponible en internet, y quienes alguna vez hemos impartido clases en la UANL no nos extrañamos de que los propios estudiantes corean en voz alta la escala de remuneración que nosotros mismos tenemos como maestros. Quienes dejan dominar su pensamiento por la ideología neoliberal y las ideas new age estilo “el cambio está en uno mismo”, dirán que somos nosotros los responsables de tener salarios tan precarios, pues estaría en nuestra decisión permanecer o no en un empleo así.

Sin embargo, quienes hemos trabajado como profesores de cátedra en la UANL comprendemos que nos dedicamos a esto no sólo por una cuestión económica, sino también por seguir ciertos ideales (aunque también hay colegas que no tienen más opción de trabajo que ser docentes por horas). Entonces, compartir conocimiento, aprender de los estudiantes mucho más de lo que enseñamos, vivir el ambiente de escuela permanente –o en todo caso, volver a ser estudiantes–, son vivencias que se añaden a las condiciones materiales de nuestra labor, y que de hecho podrían explicar parte de ese misterio de la vocación “sacrificada” del docente.

Pero aun y que vivamos condiciones de trabajo precarias, tenemos conciencia de clase; más ahora, en que nos sentimos mucho más identificados con colegas de distintas facultades, con docentes que ejercen en otros niveles de escolaridad. Cada 15 de mayo tendrá de ahora en adelante el signo de la cuarentena: de la época en que realmente nos dimos cuenta de cuánto valía nuestro trabajo. (Por supuesto que el valor de nuestro quehacer lo hemos constatado sobre todo con el reconocimiento de nuestros estudiantes, además de que hemos contado con el gran apoyo de nuestros coordinadores, quienes, como todos, no han dejado de trabajar desde que se decretó la cuarentena).

Porque…Nunca estuvimos “de vacaciones”. No. Nuestro trabajo no es “muy noble”. Tampoco. No nos pagan menos (no nos deberían de pagar menos) por estar trabajando desde casa; al contrario: deberían de pagarnos más. Pero no lo exigimos así porque nos solidarizamos con nuestras instituciones, que se han visto amenazadas por la quiebra (sobre todo las que dependen de las colegiaturas). Nuestro trabajo, por otra parte, jamás se ha reducido al tiempo que invertimos en el salón de clases o en las videoconferencias. Quien ose repetir que su amigo o hija o novio o vecina es una afortunada, un afortunado, porque tiene un trabajo “de medio tiempo”, sabrá desde ahora que es momento de proscribir para siempre tal falacia de nuestros pensamientos: trabajar veinte horas frente a grupo requerirá entre 40 y 50 horas de trabajo a la semana.

Nunca como ahora, en la UANL y en cualquier escuela de todos los niveles, públicas o privadas, es tan necesario que unamos nuestras voces en torno al asunto. El trabajo del docente debe comenzar a ser valorado por quienes lo ejercemos, y por eso no debemos permitir más artimañas blandidas por algunas instituciones, como sucede en la UANL, donde el pago de los profesores de cátedra está sujeto a un tabulador con diez categorías y donde la única forma de salir del escalafón más precario, el de profesor de Asignatura, será subir a la categoría de Asociado, lo que forzosamente implica ser profesor de planta de tiempo completo. ¿Acaso los profesores de cátedra no generamos clases que merecen ser pagadas dignamente? Y lo que es más, nunca como ahora es necesario que exijamos que se actualice el reglamento de pagos y salarios, que por el momento no otorga a los profesores de cátedra prestaciones laborales que dignifiquen su trabajo (fondo de ahorro y otros beneficios, y no sólo servicio médico a quienes imparten al menos 15 horas), como lo hacen en algunas universidades privadas de Monterrey que sí siguen los lineamientos mínimos del trabajo decente dictado por la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT). No podemos seguir usando la verborrea de siempre en cuanto a que la UANL se rige por un reglamento interno y que por tanto no está obligada a seguir los lineamientos del IMSS, como si tal reglamento interno estuviese encima de los derechos fundamentales de los trabajadores. Les llega su momento también a las leyes; a veces por su obsolescencia, pero también por lo injusto de su letra.

Y es así como ahora pueden cobrar mucho más sentido las palabras de esos dos jóvenes filósofos alemanes que en el insigne año de 1848 presentaban un pequeño ensayo que se lee como una novela por lo fascinante y apasionante de sus argumentos, y que tiene uno de los finales más memorables de la historia para un libro de no ficción, final compuesto por unas palabras que podrían resonar en los oídos de los colegas que en esta cuarentena y desde mucho antes, nos despertamos de noche para iniciar nuestras clases a distancia y nos volvemos a acostar a oscuras cuando hemos terminado (o no) los últimos pendientes para preparar las sesiones del siguiente día, y quizás podríamos identificarnos, aunque sea un poco más que antes de la cuarentena, con esa frase última de “El Manifiesto del Partido Comunista”, que aunque originalmente estaba pensada para el sector obrero, podría estallar en nuestro ser, en algún momento del día y de manera parafraseada y adaptada a nuestro contexto, más o menos así:

Profesores y profesoras de la universidad pública: ¡Unámonos! No tenemos que perder más que nuestros contratos por hora.

    Y para complementar, he aquí una propuesta: si se incrementa el costo del servicio de internet, aunque sea en unos centavos, todos los maestros deberíamos de cancelarlo (o al menos ya no ponerlo a disposición de las instituciones educativas), pues resulta absurdo que nos cobren más por algo que el Gobierno debería proporcionar y que nosotros estamos pagando para cumplir con nuestro trabajo. Prácticamente estamos pagando por trabajar, es como si en el sistema presencial me pidieran equipar el aula y pagar una parte de los servicios de agua, electricidad e internet.

    Una apreciación bastante clara y reflexiva de este fenómeno, dándonos voz e invitando a reconsiderar paradigmas del trabajo docente que lejos de ser devaluada más que nunca debería ser reconocida a todos los niveles, y desde mi opinión con especial atención a los profesores de educación básica.
